Florida Thatch Palms, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Florida thatch palm is a slender, slow-growing native fan palm that handles salt, wind and drought, which makes it a strong fit for SW Florida's coastal yards and tight courtyards at 15 to 25 ft. A smooth trunk carries a round crown of fan fronds. We deliver and plant 15 and 25 gallon palms, plus a field-grown double-trunk specimen.

Where Florida Thatch Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Florida thatch palm suits small spaces and exposed coastal lots, as a lone specimen or as three palms at different heights. The slim trunk and rounded crown keep it from crowding a courtyard, entry or lanai. Underplant with native coontie, muhly grass and beach sunflower for an all-Florida look that takes sun, salt and dry spells.
- Coastal, salt-exposed yards
- Courtyards and tight spaces
- Native-style plantings
How our crew plants it
The 15 and 25 gallon palms go in level with the soil, with no soil piled against the trunk. The field-grown double goes in at the depth it grew and is braced for several months until new roots hold it. Our crew waters the palms in and cleans up. New palms need frequent watering for the first couple of months.
Care after planting
- Feed with a slow-release palm fertilizer, about 8-2-12 with micronutrients, in spring and fall; Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June 1 to September 30.
- Remove only fully dead fronds, and keep string trimmers and mowers off the trunk.
- Water deeply but not often after the first year, since it likes moisture but handles short dry spells.
- Keep turf and weeds out of the root zone with a mulch ring, because slow-growing palms resent competition.
- Cover young palms on frost nights inland.
What to watch for
- Growth is slow, so damage takes years to grow out; protect the crown from frost, string trimmers and heavy trimming.
Florida Thatch Palm questions we hear
Is Florida thatch palm salt tolerant?+
Yes, very. Florida thatch palm handles salt spray, salty soil and wind, which is why it grows wild in coastal hammocks and works on exposed lots. It does not like salt or brackish flooding, so keep it out of spots that tidal water or storm surge covers.
How tall and how fast does Florida thatch palm grow?+
It grows slowly to about 15 to 25 ft, with a slender trunk and a crown 6 to 10 ft wide. Expect inches a year in the early years, not feet. That slow pace is why a field-grown double or a 25 gallon palm gives you a head start.
Can Florida thatch palm handle frost in Fort Myers?+
Mostly, yes. It is a zone 10 palm, so coastal Fort Myers and Cape Coral rarely get cold enough to hurt it. A hard frost burns the fronds, and inland yards should cover young palms on frost nights.
