Papyrus, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Where most plants drown, papyrus thrives: a tall, wet-loving sedge that grows fast in Southwest Florida and is best at pond edges, rain gardens and other soggy spots. Triangular stems rise 6 to 10 ft topped with feathery green umbels. We quote papyrus by text, then deliver it, plant it, water it in, and clean up.

Where Papyrus works in a SW Florida yard
Papyrus is a vertical accent for wet ground: the soft edge of a pond, a rain garden, a low corner that never drains, or a large pot set in a shallow water bowl. Plant three or five clumps rather than one so the stems lean together.
Yellow iris, canna lily and crinum lily share the wet, sunny conditions and supply the lower layers in front of its tall stems.

- Rain gardens and swales
- Water-feature accents
- Containers set in water
How our crew plants it
Plant papyrus where the soil stays wet: roots in saturated ground or a few inches of water, or a pot with no drainage holes in a water tray. Set the root ball level with the soil and space clumps 3 to 4 ft apart.
In a drier bed, Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so soak it daily at first.
Care after planting
- Never let the soil dry out; papyrus browns and collapses quickly without constant moisture.
- Keep fertilizer away from open water; a light feeding in spring and early fall is plenty, and nitrogen and phosphorus products are banned in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island from June 1 to September 30.
- Cut browned or fallen stems to the base every month or two, and cut frost-burned stems after the last frost.
- Cover or move potted plants on frost nights.
What to watch for
- Papyrus spreads by thick rhizomes into a dense, widening clump, so keep it in a pot or contained edge if the water connects to a canal, preserve or natural wetland.
- Tall stems flop in storms and heavy rain, so grow it in a group and cut downed stems back.
Papyrus questions we hear
Can papyrus grow in a regular garden bed in Florida?+
Only if you keep it wet. Papyrus needs constantly moist to wet soil, and in a normal bed on a two-day irrigation schedule it will brown and decline in the dry season. It is much happier at a pond edge, in a rain garden, or in a pot set in a shallow tray of water.
How tall does papyrus get?+
Papyrus commonly grows 6 to 10 ft tall in Southwest Florida and can go taller in rich, wet soil and full sun. The stems are topped with a feathery green umbel, and a clump widens to 3 to 5 ft or more. It grows fast, so expect full height within a season or two in warm weather.
Will papyrus survive a freeze in Cape Coral or Lehigh Acres?+
The roots will, but the tops will not. Frost burns papyrus stems brown, then new shoots return from the rhizome in spring. Coastal yards in Cape Coral rarely get a hard frost, while inland Lehigh Acres gets it more often, so cut back damaged stems after the last frost and keep the roots wet.
