Baby Sunrose, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Baby sunrose is a low, trailing succulent groundcover that thrives in Southwest Florida's full sun, sandy soil and heat. Bright green, heart-shaped leaves carry small magenta-pink flowers from spring into fall. It fills sunny borders, rock beds, wall tops and containers well, but it is not for foot traffic or soggy spots. We deliver and plant it in 1 gallon pots.

Where Baby Sunrose works in a SW Florida yard

Use baby sunrose as a bright green carpet along a sunny border, spilling over a low wall or in front of agave and aloe. It does best in lean, fast-draining soil, so pairing it with other sun-lovers works better than putting it in a lawn sprinkler zone.

It is not a lawn replacement, because the leaves bruise underfoot. Blue daze and bulbine make good partners.

  • Sunny border groundcover
  • Spilling over walls
  • Containers and planters
  • Rock and gravel beds
  • Slope and bare-spot cover

How our crew plants it

Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in full sun and well-drained soil, at the same depth they grew in the pot. Raise the bed a few inches in low spots, because rainy-season wet soil rots the stems. Water regularly for the first few weeks, which Lee and Collier allow for new plantings, then back off.

Care after planting

  • Water new plants through the first few weeks, then let the bed dry out between waterings, since established plants get by on rain and your assigned days.
  • Trim runners that wander onto paths, lawn or neighboring beds, and bag the clippings, because stem pieces root wherever they land.
  • Skip heavy fertilizer; one light spring feeding is plenty, and keep nitrogen and phosphorus products out of the June 1 to September 30 ban window in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • Cut back leggy or frost-burned growth in spring to refresh the planting.

What to watch for

  • Soggy soil in the summer rainy season rots stems, so plant on a slight rise and keep it off daily irrigation.
  • Stem pieces root easily, so bag trimmings rather than dumping them near preserves, canal banks or natural areas.

Baby Sunrose questions we hear

Is baby sunrose a good groundcover in Southwest Florida?+

Yes, in full sun and fast-draining soil. It handles heat and drought, and it flowers from spring into fall. It does not like shade, constant wetness or foot traffic. It works best in borders, on wall tops and in beds with other sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants.

How far apart should I plant baby sunrose?+

Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. They fill in over a growing season in sun and warm weather, rooting where stems touch the soil. Closer spacing covers faster, and wider spacing saves plants. Keep it back from lawn edges where it can creep in.

Does baby sunrose survive frost in Cape Coral?+

Light frost burns the leaves, and a hard freeze can kill it back, since it is a tender succulent. Coastal Lee and Collier usually miss that, while inland yards like Lehigh Acres can see it. It often regrows from the base when warm weather returns.
