Where Caranday Palm works in a SW Florida yard

Caranday is a collector's specimen: a slim gray trunk topped with stiff, round, gray-green fans. Give it full sun and open lawn so the crown shows, and use it alone or as a pair on either side of a drive.

It copes with the soggy summer soil that stresses many fan palms. Keep it a few feet off walkways, and underplant with lantana or society garlic.

  • Specimen fan palm
  • Open full-sun lawns
  • Yards with wet summer soil
  • Rare palm collections

How our crew plants it

Plant at the same depth the palm grew, with the top of the root ball level with the soil. Early summer is the best window for field-grown palms, when soil is warm and rain frequent.

Brace for the first season, mulch off the trunk and water in well. Extra watering is allowed for new plantings under Lee and Collier rules, then taper.

Care after planting

  • Feed with an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer with magnesium and micronutrients in spring and again in October, and none from June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • Remove only dead fronds, and keep string trimmers off the trunk.
  • Water new palms often for the first few months, then rely on rain and your assigned days.

What to watch for

  • The leaf stems carry sharp teeth, so keep the palm back from walkways and wear gloves and long sleeves when trimming.
  • Potassium and magnesium run short in sandy soil and show as yellow spotting or burnt tips on older fronds, which palm fertilizer prevents.

Caranday Palm questions we hear

Is caranday palm cold hardy in Florida?+

It is one of the hardier fan palms, so SW Florida winters are rarely a problem. Fronds can scorch in a hard freeze. Coastal Lee and Collier almost never get that cold, while inland spots like Lehigh Acres should cover young palms on frost nights.

Will caranday palm grow in wet or low areas?+

Yes, better than most fan palms. It handles wet soil and dry spells, which suits Cape Coral lots that stay soggy in the rainy season. Standing water for weeks still stresses any palm, so plant at the right depth and avoid spots that hold water long after storms.

How big does a caranday palm get?+

It reaches roughly 30 to 40 ft, but slowly, over many years, with a slim gray trunk and a round crown of stiff fans. A field-grown palm at 6 to 12 ft already has presence, and it will keep gaining height and trunk for decades.
