Where Dwarf Yaupon Holly (Schillings) works in a SW Florida yard
Schillings gives you the clipped, formal look boxwood gives up north, in a plant that actually likes SW Florida. Use it as a low hedge along a walk or around a bed, in front of taller shrubs, or in a repeating row at a formal entry.
Its small, dark green leaves make a good backdrop for flowering plants. Native companions that share its conditions include coontie, muhly grass and Simpson's stopper.
- Low formal hedge
- Foundation and border planting
- Coastal salt-spray beds
- Clipped formal shapes
How our crew plants it
Set each plant level with the surrounding soil in a hole twice as wide as the pot and no deeper. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart for a low hedge. We water in well and mulch 2 inches deep, away from the stems.
Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water every day or two at first, then taper.
Care after planting
- Shear lightly two or three times a year in the growing season to hold a formal line.
- Water new plants regularly through the first dry season, then let it settle into your assigned days or less.
- It needs little feeding; one light application of slow-release fertilizer in spring is plenty, with no nitrogen or phosphorus products from June 1 to September 30 where local rules ban them.
- Keep sprinklers from soaking it daily, since soggy soil is its main weakness.
What to watch for
- Constantly wet or poorly drained soil causes root rot, so skip low spots that hold water.
- Scale and spider mites occasionally show up in hot, dry spells, so check leaf undersides and treat early with horticultural oil.
Dwarf Yaupon Holly (Schillings) questions we hear
How big does Schillings dwarf yaupon holly get?+
It grows slowly into a dense, rounded mound about 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Plants stay compact without much pruning, which is why it works for low hedges and foundation borders. A light shearing keeps it shorter and tighter if you want a more formal line.
Is dwarf yaupon holly salt tolerant?+
Yes. Yaupon is a native of coastal Florida and handles salt spray and sandy soil well, so it works on canal and gulf-side lots. It does not like soggy soil or standing water, so plant it where water drains after summer rains.
How far apart should I plant dwarf yaupon for a low hedge?+
Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart on center. Closer to 2 feet gives a continuous line sooner, and 3 feet looks more open and saves plants. Keep the row 1 to 2 feet from walls and walkways so each mound has room to fill out.
