Where Shooting Star Jasmine works in a SW Florida yard

Plant shooting star jasmine where its fragrance can be enjoyed: along a patio fence, up a trellis beside the front door or over an arbor near a seating area. Tie young stems to the support and the vine fills in from there.

Use a sturdy trellis, since a heavy vine can pull down a flimsy one. It pairs well with plumbago and firebush at the base.

  • Fragrant fence or trellis vine
  • Arbor and pergola cover
  • Patio and entry fragrance
  • Large container with support

How our crew plants it

Set the trellis or fence first, then plant 12 to 18 in out from its base so the roots are not crowded against it. We plant each 3 gallon jasmine at the depth it grew in the pot, space plants 4 to 6 ft apart, water in, and mulch two inches deep off the stems.

Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings.

Care after planting

  • Prune right after a flush of flowers to control size and keep the vine on its support.
  • Feed lightly in March and October with a slow-release fertilizer, and skip June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • Water regularly while it is getting established, then only in long dry spells.
  • Cover young vines with frost cloth on nights forecast near freezing, particularly inland.

What to watch for

  • Scale, aphids and the sooty mold that follows them can build up on dense jasmine vines, so thin overgrown growth and treat early.

Shooting Star Jasmine questions we hear

Does shooting star jasmine need a trellis?+

Yes, give it a trellis, fence or arbor. It is a vine, so without support it sprawls or tangles into whatever is nearby. A sturdy structure matters, because a mature vine gets heavy. Tie young stems in early and the vine fills in on its own.

Is shooting star jasmine fragrant, and when does it bloom?+

Yes, the white flowers are fragrant. It blooms in flushes, and it flowers best in full sun with pruning right after each flush. Plant it near a patio, window or entry where you will notice the scent.

How often do I need to prune shooting star jasmine?+

Plan on pruning two or three times a year. It grows fast, so trim right after a flush of flowers to keep it on its support and off roofs, gutters and screens. Thin crowded growth in late winter so light and air reach the inside of the vine.
